ArtemisiaForAfrica is a collective of athletes and artists brought together on the initiative of Claude Makélélé to fund research on Artemisia, a potential treatment for COVID-19.

Why this project?

Artemisia annua herbal tea is a well-known treatment in Africa for malaria which has also been used since January 2020 in the Chinese protocol in the fight against COVID-19.

On 4 May, the WHO declared Artemisia annua one of the possible treatments for COVID-19, provided that its effectiveness is scientifically confirmed to ensure the safety of populations (press release 4 May 2020 ).

But funding is slow to come.

Africa must give its researchers and doctors the means to develop its own response to the epidemic, in the same way as Europe is aiming to do with its Discovery research project.

How does it work?

€150,000 is the budget needed immediately to start a clinical trial in an African research centre.

€2 million is the budget needed to carry out a multi-centre clinical trial, probably in DRC, led by Dr Jérôme Munyangi with other research teams from African countries, notably Senegal. The trial will test the effectiveness of the treatment and the conditions under which it guarantees the safety of the populations.

In just a few months, we will be able to know if Artemisia can bring hope for Africa. An effective, readily available and inexpensive treatment derived from a plant that grows on the continent.

In the event that any funds remain at the end of the COVID-19 crisis, #ArtemisiaForAfrica will invest the total remaining balance in research on different species of Artemisia used to treat other diseases including malaria.

Together, let's give African researchers the resources they need.

Who we are

The collective #ArtemisiaForAfrica is coordinated by La Maison de l'Artemisia, a French humanitarian association promoting Artemisia annua and afra in the fight against malaria, targeting the most vulnerable populations in the South. The funds raised will be used entirely for the benefit of research in Africa.
