Urgent - Call for donations!!!

The Maasais of Maasai Mara in Kenya are on the verge of starvation because of the Covid-19 pandemic

Today, we are calling for your urgent support and donations, which will enable us to quickly avert the famine situation. And to put in place our longer-term projects so that such a crisis situation does not occur again among the Maasais.

The situation :

In Kenya, the Maasais are suffering the consequences of the coronavirus crisis, they are already on the verge of famine. Located one day drive from Nairobi, they usually survive thanks to the sale of their livestock at markets and the fallout from tourism in the neighbouring national park.

Since the beginning of the crisis, the government has banned markets and ordered the army to block roads in order to prevent the spread of the virus. Today, the Maasais can no longer meet their basic food needs due to lack of money and the difficulty of getting food supplies from outside the region.

The Maasais are a proud people who, despite the impact of climate change, which they are bearing the brunt of, are trying to survive as best they can on their own.

In 2016, they suffered a year and a half-long drought that devastated their cow herds, and this year the torrential rains in January, resulted in the proliferation of a parasite that largely decimated their sheep herds.

Who are we?

My name is Coralie Malet and I am originally from Reunion Island. I arrived in Kenya on a business trip in 2017 and I never left. I fell under the spell of this simple way of life in harmony with the natural environment, and of the great kindness of these people who welcomed me among their own.

To help them maintain their way of life and preserve their culture while improving their daily living conditions, I, together with them, created an Olchani humanitarian association. I am currently in France to set up its French branch which will be in charge of raising funds in order to provide practical solutions to the problem of drinking water, food self-sufficiency ,and, to support some other projects mostly related to women.

Together let's write the rest of the story:

The goals as I speak are: - firstly, to help them as quickly as possible to alleviate a food emergency... - and secondly, to raise funds needed to act in the long term by planting community allotment gardens so that such a situation does not repeat itself in the future.

What do the sums sent correspond to?

2,5 € feed a family of 7 people for one day. 5 € feed a family of 7 people for two days. 30 € feed a family of 7 people for a week. 120 € feeds a family of 7 people for a month.

Food: mainly maize flour and dried beans.

What will the funding be used for and what we want to achieve :

  • Objective 1:** €12,000**, provides food for 100 families for one month.

  • Objective 2: 24 000 €, provides food for 200 families for one month.

  • Objective 3: 30 000 €, Objective 2 + the establishment of permaculture gardens.

We are committed to giving regular updates on the evolving situation thanks to your donations on our Facebook and Instagram pages to which you can subscribe.

On behalf of my Maasai friends and myself, please accept our sincere thanks from the bottom of our hearts.
